Pursuing Excellence as Whittier's Premier BunionSurgerySpecialist

Bunions cause pain; they are unsightly. Many patients seek consultation at our office and some present for a second opinion. In any case, if you or a family member are looking for a bunion surgery expert in Whittier, you have come to the right place. At the Ankle & Foot Care Center, Dr. Hassan is an expert at performing bunion surgeries.

During the first visit, he will evaluate the patient, look at the X-rays, and propose some surgical options for the patient. Granted that most surgeries do come with risks and not all patients are candidates for surgeries, he will inform the patient whether or not surgery is an option. For example, if a patient is a current smoker or a former smoker, Dr. Hassan will have to take into account the overall healing of the bone and tissue as a doctor would have to realign the bones and use screws or plates to maintain proper alignment of those bones. Further, Dr. Hassan will speak to the patient and present them with a realistic answer for the bunion treatment.

Our goal is to allow patients to understand that, yes, the surgical techniques have improved and now surgeons utilize far superior implants, however, all surgeries do carry some risks. Dr. Hassan will explain what risks the patient may have and answer all questions the patient may have. His goal is to ensure that the patient is well aware of the bunion procedure and what patients can expect before, during the surgery, and in the recovery period.

With his extensive experience in successfully treating patients with painful bunions, he has noticed that the patients tend to have swelling on the operated site for 4 to 6 weeks as well as some discomfort. This is normal as the tissue is healing. We tend to notice that the body is sending healing factors to the foot caused by vasodilation, meaning the arteries and capillaries are sending out more fluids to the area so that the tissue heals. Generally applying ice bags behind the calf of an operated foot two to three times daily could improve the swelling. Further taking antiinflammatories such as ibuprofen also helps to improve edema. Not placing the operated foot in the dependent position would also help improve edema. Besides edema, the patient would expect some itchiness around the incision site. This is also normal as the tissue heals, the incision site tends to be tender and has an increased tendency to cause itchiness. Often taking antihistamines such as Benadryl would help reduce the itchiness during the postoperative period. During the first two weeks after surgery, the patient would be expected to not do any strenuous exercises as the stitches might come loose and or the patient may have bleeding. Once the stitches come out in two weeks, the patient could slowly start weight-bearing in normal shoes, however, should use the pain as a guide. If he or she is feeling pain, it's prudent to rest, ice, and elevate until the patient feels comfortable in the coming days so that he or she can increase the activity level. Dr. Hassan wants the best for his patients, which means even after the procedure, he would recommend physical therapy to improve strength, balance, and proprioception.
