What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to achieve or sustain a sufficient penile erection for satisfactory sexual performance.

Previously, it was thought that psychological issues caused erectile dysfunction. Physical anomalies, particularly related to penis blood flow, are now thought to be the root cause of erectile dysfunction in the majority of men.

What Causes Erections?

During sexual stimulation, nerves release chemicals that increase blood flow to the penis. The blood rushes into the two erection chambers of the penis, which are made of spongy muscle tissue (the corpus cavernosum). The corpus cavernosum chambers are not hollow.

During an erection, the spongy tissues relax and trap blood. The penis contracts as a result of the blood pressure in the chambers, resulting in an erection.

Obesity, sedentary living, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and cigarette smoking are all risk factors for arteriosclerosis, which can induce erectile dysfunction before causing heart damage.
