This whole thing isnt so much about the hyped return of a player as it is the overlooked return of what worked. For some reason, Brian Kelly got away from what made his teams so special for so many years. Change, everyone, isnt always good.MORE:| | The days of ground and pound are over at Notre Dame. The return of Everett Golson is simply a piece of the proce s.We have to score more points, Kelly says matter of factly. While that seems like a throwaway, no kidding statement, it underscores what really matters now in the college game. Teams arent winning critical games with safe, predictable offenses.Youre not lining up and trading punches and beating everyone Jevon Kearse Jersey on the schedule because youre tougher than the other guy. It just doesnt work that way, anymore. Not even for Alabama. And not anymore for Notre Dame.We had a lot of succe s in the past with what we did, Kelly said during the first week of fall camp at Notre Dame.It only took two painful seasons to figure it out.Two years ago, Kelly decided he wanted his offense to be more physical; to be able to line up against any team and physically control the line of scrimmage. He wanted, more than anything, to be like Alabama. This, of course, was directly opposite of everything he believed in, and everything that made his teams from the NCAA lower division, to mid-major FBS to BCS level so dangerous and dynamic. The foundation Nate Davis Jersey of multiple championship teams. The very things that got Kelly the Notre Dame job in the first place.Predictably, it imploded. Even two years ago, when Notre Dame navigated an undefeated regular season and was a game away from winning it all, it was fools gold. That offense was 78th in the nation in scoring, and when the Irish had to have it in the game that mattered most, it disappeared in a blowout lo s to Alabama in the national title game. So when Kelly began this spring by declaring this ND team would be different; that it would look more like his teams at Grand Valley State and Central Michigan and Cincinnati, the narrative quickly moved to the quarterback spot. What were doing now feels very comfortable for me, Golson said.Because what Notre Dame is doing now is what it should have been doing all along. Even in 2012, when Julio Jones T Shirts Golson was a redshirt freshman, the offense was its most dangerous when he A.) ran while breaking containment, and B.) threw on the run while breaking containment. Now that Golson is back after spending a year away in exile for cheating in cla s, everything seemingly fits into place. Kelly wants his offense to be spread and multiple and my six skill players are better than your six covering them.Golson, with his ability to make plays outside the tackles, is the perfect fit. Only theres one hiccup at least, to everyone but Kelly. His name is Malik Zaire, and as much as you think Kelly would be foolish to play anyone Josh Reynolds Jersey but Golson, you cant ignore history. No one manages quarterbacks better than Kelly; no one motivates and develops the most important position on the field like he does.A few years ago, former Cincinnati quarterback Tony Pike summed it up best: Ive never seen a coach more in-tune with everything that makes the player and the position work, and I doubt I ever will. The same coach who this year will script plays for the first time in the Notre Dame offense. The same coach who, after letting others dictate what his offense will be, has decided to seize control again and do whats worked for so long. For the first time since he arrived at Notre Dame, he has two quarterbacks who can run the same offense. Hes not scripting specific plays for one (Tommy Rees), and the rest of the offense for another (Golson). So when Kelly says its a true competition, know this: he believes both Golson and Zaire can win games. Just like he believed both Pike and Zach Collaros could (and did) at Cincinnati Marcus Johnson Jersey .I should be able to figure this thing out, Kelly said.Whos playing is only part of the picture. What offense theyre directing is the bigger story. In that sense, Kelly already has figured it out.
