Now, the SoundCloud Player One tournament looks to merge both tournament from rodeoneerer's blog

Weirdos of the internet rejoice: SoundCloud is hosting a video game tournament, and rapper Rico Nasty is playing host.

SoundCloud Player One will pit eight SoundCloud artists and gamers against one another in a Fortnite tournament for a slew of exclusive prizes. Esports commentator Javier "MonsterDface" Collazo will join Rico Nasty as host, and Rico's set to play a special halftime performance.

Viewers of the livestream will additionally be treated to a halftime performance by Nasty, to be held at Culture House in the rapper’s hometown of Washington, D.C. Other details will be announced in the coming days, including the full player lineup and exclusive prizes.

Eight of SoundCloud’s artists-turned-gamers will compete in Fortnite‘s online world during “a game of fortress-building, opponent-smashing, and smack-talking,” a press release explains; the full lineup of players has yet to be revealed. Esports commentator MonsterDface will co-host the free event alongside rapper Rico Nasty, who will also provide entertainment in the form of a halftime concert. Fans are encouraged to watch on SoundCloud’s Facebook page or Twitch channel, where they can interact with players through a real-time chat function.

The roster of competitors will be made up of SoundCloud creators, yet the line-up has yet to be released. According to a press release from SoundCloud, more than 49 percent of SoundCloud's user base identifies as gamers making a musically inclined Fortnite tournament an obvious way to boost creator-to-fan engagement.  SoundCloud’s VP of brand marketing, Erika Leone, wrote, "We’re stepping into the gaming space for the first time to bring [creators and listeners] together to engage in innovative ways and connect rising creators with new fans."

Erika Leone, SoundCloud's vice president of brand marketing, says the tournament is a result of creative thinking spurred on by the pandemic. The company says nearly half of its users identify as gamers, making this tournament if not a logical step, certainly a natural one.

The SoundCloud announcement coincides with an explosion of livestream events -- both before and during the pandemic -- that bridge the worlds of music and gaming. Last April, Travis Scott drew headlines when his blockbuster virtual performance in the multiplayer video game Fortnite Battle Royale drew tens of millions of views.

Now, the SoundCloud Player One tournament looks to merge both tournament and concert as SoundCloud celebrities go head to head in Fortnite. The event will be broadcast live on SoundCloud's Twitch and Facebook pages and will be hosted by professional Fortnite commentator MonsterDface and hip-hop icon Rico Nasty. In addition to watching their favorite SoundCloud artists compete against one another in the world's most popular battle royale, viewers can enjoy a live performance from Rico Nasty during the events half-time show. The event will take place on February 18th at 8 p.m. EST.

V-Bucks can be spent on the regularly updated Fortnite Item Shop. The in-game store features cosmetic items such as Fortnite outfits, back blings, gliders, harvesting tools, weapon skins, and vehicle skins.
